The British Museum
While the name of the museum may indicate that it is entirely about Great Britain it’s as a matter of fact a historical journey round the world with exhibits and galleries covering Egypt, the Americas, Rome and ancient Greece, the Middle East and Asia. The museum was the 1st national public museum in the world and opened to the public on 15 Jan. 1759. In the beginning It was first housed in a 17th century mansion, Montagu House, in Bloomsbury on the site of the nowadays building.
Established in 1753 by Act of Parliament, from the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, the British Museum is among the greatest museums of the world, showing the works of man from prehistoric to present time with collections attracted from the whole world. Famous objects include the Sutton Hoo and Mildenhall treasures, Rosetta Stone, the Portland Vase, sculptures from the Parthenon, etc. There’s also a programme of special daily gallery tours and exhibitions, guided tours and talks.
